A new addition to the team
Magnus Carlsen
Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen, born on November 30, 1990, is a Norwegian chess grandmaster. He’s a five-time World Chess Champion, holding titles in rapid and blitz chess as well. Carlsen has been the No. 1 in FIDE world chess rankings since July 1, 2011, with a peak rating of 2882, the highest in history. He also boasts the longest unbeaten streak in classical chess at the elite level.
Carlsen displayed his chess prowess early, becoming a grandmaster shortly after turning 13. At 15, he won the Norwegian Chess Championship, and by 17, he achieved success in the top group of the Corus chess tournament. Remarkably, at 18, he surpassed a rating of 2800, setting a record as the youngest to do so. In 2010, at just 19, he became the youngest person to reach No. 1 in the FIDE world rankings.
The 5-Time World Champion
2013 Carlsen’s First World Championship
Despite Emmanuel Lasker’s legendary 27-year streak, his achievement is slightly tarnished by the lack of competition as well as the yearly recurrence of the world championship. Nowadays it is every two years. Carlsen won his first Fide Chess World Championship on 22 November 2013, by defeating Viswanathan Anand by 6½ to 3½. An incredibly impressive score considering Vishy is the greatest Indian chess player of all time…
2014 — Anand Returns
In 2014, Vishy returned to attempt to win back his title of chess world champion. Carlsen, however, was ready. Despite Anand almost equalising in game 11, Carlsen pulled out one of his favourite tricks and won from a losing position… he won the match 6.5–4.5.
2016 — Karjakin Pushes Carlsen To The Limit
Sergey Karjakin, one of Russia’s strongest grandmasters gave Carlsen his toughest-ever battle. he led the score until game 10 when Carlsen showed serious engine-like ability to pull off a spectacular win — sending the World Championship to tiebreakers, in which Carlsen was crushing.
2018 — Caruana Survives Classical
In London, in 2018, Carlsen faced the third highest-rated player of all time: Fabiano Caruana. Fabi managed to draw Carlsen in all 11 classical games, an extremely impressive feat but was absolutely crushed by Carlsen in the rapid tiebreaks, losing 3–0.
2021 — Ian Nepomniatchi (And Carlsen’s Final World Championship)
In Dubai, in 2020, Carlsen faced the legendary Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniatchi. The match was drawn in the classical portion until the legendary Game 6, when after more than 120 moves, Carlsen squeezed a win out of Ian. After this, Nepo broke down and ended up losing the match 3.5–7.5.
